About the project
When a critically ill or injured patient needs emergency care, timely access to diagnostic imaging helps clinical teams understand their injuries and decide what needs to happen next. Yet some patients at Groote Schuur Hospital currently need to travel more than 100 metres from the Emergency and Trauma Centres to access imaging.
The next phase of the new Emergency Centre will change this. A dedicated Radiology Suite, due to open towards the end of 2027, will bring CT, X-ray and ultrasound services within metres of the patients who need them. This means less patient movement, faster access to imaging and better continuity of monitoring and care.
The need is substantial: approximately 1,800–2,000 emergency and trauma patients require general X-rays every month, while 750–1,000 require CT scans each month after 16:00 alone.
Groote Schuur Hospital Trust is raising funds for two immediate priorities:
A CT scanner — R12 million: To provide dedicated CT imaging close to emergency and trauma patients, 24 hours a day.
The first X-ray room — R2.8–R3 million: To establish essential general X-ray capacity in the new suite. Three rooms are planned, with our initial focus on equipping at least one.
The space is being built. The patients already need the service. Your contribution will help put the equipment in place.
Partner with Groote Schuur Hospital Trust to bring critical imaging closer to our patients. Every second counts.
